Lessons and coaching

Small groups, local coaches, and the least intimidating point break on this coast to learn it on.

Start where you actually are.

Never stood up

Soft top, 8 ft or 9 ft

You spend the first two sessions on the inside in waist deep water on a soft top. We push you into whitewater until standing stops being a decision and starts being a reflex. Most people ride their first green wave on day three.

Standing, not steering

Soft top or foam, moving to hard

You can get to your feet but the board goes where it wants. We work on where you look, where your weight sits, and paddling into the wave early enough that you are not surviving the drop.

Surfing, want the point

Your board, or ours

You can ride down the line. Now it is about reading the section, positioning on a long wave that changes three times, and the turns you keep almost making. Filmed, reviewed, repeated.

A day here

The tide sets the timetable.

  1. 07:30

    Dawn check

Someone walks down to look at the point before anything is decided. The tide sets the day, not the timetable.

  2. 08:00

    First session

Two hours in the water. The wind is usually still asleep and the bay is at its cleanest.

  3. 10:30

    Rest

Out of the water while the wind picks up. Eat, rest, and keep your board and wetsuit for the afternoon.

  4. 15:30

    Second session

Optional, and tide dependent. Some go back out with a coach; others use the board and wetsuit included with their booking to surf independently.

  5. 17:30

    Boards away

Boards and wetsuits back, and a look at tomorrow's forecast before you head off.

Group sizes we do not go above.

Five students to one coach in the water for group lessons and packages. Beyond that, a coach is watching rather than coaching.

  • Ahmed holds a federation certificate in surf instruction.
  • Beginner sessions run at the inside of the bay, never on the reefs.
  • A board and wetsuit are included only with a lesson or package booking, not rented separately.
  • We cap total students in the water at fifteen, regardless of bookings.

Before you book

Questions people actually ask.

If yours is not here, put it on the enquiry form. We would rather answer it now than have you find out in the water.

I cannot swim well. Can I still book?

You need to be comfortable in water over your head without panicking. You do not need to be a strong swimmer for beginner sessions, because they run in waist to chest deep water at the inside of the bay. Tell us on the booking form and we will put you with a coach who knows before you arrive.

Do you arrange accommodation?

No. We are a surf school, not a surf camp, so you book your own room and we teach you to surf. Imsouane has guesthouses and apartments within a few minutes' walk of the bay, and rates drop sharply outside the winter swell season. Put your dates on the enquiry form and we will send you the short list our returning guests use.

Is Imsouane crowded?

The bay gets busy on a good swell, particularly in winter and around European holidays. It is a long wave, which spreads people out more than a beach break does, but you will not have it to yourself. We start early partly for the wind and partly for the space.

Do I need my own board?

No. Boards and suits are included in every lesson and coaching rate. If you are travelling with your own board, bring it. The coast has enough variety to justify a second board if you have one.

What if there is no swell that week?

It happens, mostly in summer. Small days are often the best days for beginners on the inside of the bay. If there is truly nothing, we move the lesson to another day or refund it. We will not run a lesson in conditions that teach you nothing.

Can children take lessons?

From eight years old, in private or family sessions only. Under twelves surf with a parent present on the beach.
